Sougia is a small, cozy, picturesque village on the southwest side of Crete. It has about 150 inhabitants and there are a number of tavernas on the promenade next to the large pebble beach. In addition there are two mini markets for groceries. Sougia has a few cafes and bars, but do not expect anything noisy. Sougia is not affected by mass tourism and this will probably not be the case either since there are hardly possibilities to build due to archaeological findings in the ground.
It is an ideal destination for those seeking peace and those who still want to enjoy the real Greece. It also offers many opportunities for hikers. There are many hiking trails in the area and it is close to the famous Samaria Gorge (the longest gorge in Europe).
In the neighborhood you will find several historic churches from the 13th- 16th century and the ruins of the ancient Elyros in Rodovani.
